In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York."

Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people.

In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol’s will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts. As a master of supreme decoration and expressive use of color, his visionary experiments into different styles of painting from his impressionistic domestic and figurative subjects to his abstract cut-outs changed our perception of the world.

Early in his career, Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist (a group of artists known as the "wild beasts"). His work gravitated to the beautiful and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Matisse’s Fauvist years were superseded by an experimental period, as he abandoned three-dimensional effects in favor of dramatically simplified areas of pure color, flat shape and strong pattern.

As a man of nervous temperament, he coaxed his anxious tension into serenity through painting. In his later years, Matisse moved into a period of selfless invention, creating his cut-outs carved in colored paper and sometimes collaged into vast pictures. The geometric rightness and color radiance of these pictures sum up his greatest gift: his innate knowledge of how colors and shapes could come to life spectacularly when set in context.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/dance-i-23-5x35-image-on-27-5x36-5-premium-paper-664.jpg?v=1631722229
jennifer-lommers-within
Within

© Jennifer Lommers

About the Artist

Trained at the University of Washington School of Fine Art, Jennifer received her BFA in Painting in 1992 and teaching certification from Western Washington University in 1995. After graduating, however, she spent several years following opportunities in the business and tech industries. Then in 2006 she came back to her love of art, embracing a new career as a full time artist, which she still enjoys today. Preferring to paint from memory, Jennifer layers thin and thick applications of acrylic paint, focusing on the variety of texture and color of the piece in combination with the natural forms of the composition. Trained by abstract expressionists, she paints quickly preferring a gestural style giving her paintings a whimsical fun energy. Her award winning work is well loved and collected worldwide as well as locally in the Northwest where she spends most her time. Over the years, Jennifer has lived in Seattle, Bellingham, and the Skagit Valley. She also enjoyed a childhood in the beautiful Puget Sound region where she spent every summer camping and hiking with her family in the Olympics, Cascades, and down to the Oregon Coast. She is now happy to call the beautiful Willamette Valley home, a short journey from her coastal childhood summers. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes. However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use. How many stories they must have to tell”. \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging. He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics. His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania. An eccentric and masterful Surrealist in painting and in life, Dali wrote in his diary two years before entering art school in Madrid during the early 1920s: "Perhaps I’ll be despised and misunderstood, . . . but I’ll be a great genius." Throughout his life, Dali cultivated eccentricity and a predisposition towards narcissistic exhibitionism, claiming that his creative energies were derived from it. The spectrum of imagery from fantastic to nightmarish visions which Dali produced are the supreme evidence of these idiosyncrasies. Born in Figueras, Spain, Dali first studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Madrid and was influenced by metaphysical painters de Chirico and Carrà while there. Equally admiring the meticulous realism of the Pre-Raphaelites and French 19th century painters, he began to blend conceptual styles and techniques. Beginning in 1927, Dali exhibited in Madrid and Barcelona, earning a reputation for being one of the most promising younger painters. A visit to Paris in 1928 brought him into contact with Picasso and the Surrealists: Miró, Masson, Ernst, Tanguy and André Breton. Shortly thereafter he became a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. In 1941 he had his first retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.

After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.

Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. Reality is reflective of consciousness, so if you find yourself in front of a painting that moves you, realize that you’re you’re looking at an aspect of yourself, and that your consciousness is creating your own unique version of that painting.”\r\rWyper drafts geometries by hand or as them laser-cut into birch, and then paints them in acrylic with a palette knife, creating rough imperfections over ordered shapes. The paintings Johns went on to produce depict commonplace, two-dimensional subjects such as flags, targets, maps, numbers, and letters of the alphabet. He was able to raise these objects to the level of icons through his paint handling and manipulation of surface texture, which he obtained through the encaustic technique. In their willful and ironic banality and their rejection of emotional expression, these early works were a radical departure from the then-dominant Abstract Expressionist style. Johns's unabashed depiction of commonplace emblems and objects was emulated by many Pop art artists. From 1961 he began to attach real objects to his canvases. He grew up in California and Arizona. In the early 1930s he studied in New York City under Thomas Hart Benton, and later he was employed on the WPA Federal Art Project. In 1945 he married the artist Lee Krasner. Two years later, after several years of semiabstract work stimulated by psychotherapy, Pollock began to lay his canvas on the floor and pour or drip paint onto it in stages. This process permitted him to record the force and scope of his gestures in trajectories of enamel or aluminum paint that "veiled" the figurative elements found in his earlier work. The results were huge areas covered with complex and dynamic linear patterns that fuse image and form and engulf the vision of the spectator in their scale and intricacy. Pollock believed that art derived from the unconscious and judged his work and that of others on its inherent authenticity of personal expression. He became known as a leading practitioner of Abstract Expressionism, particularly the form known as action painting. Championed by critic Clement Greenberg and others, he became a celebrity. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. Her love of animals started from her first memories as a child and was a passion that grew even stronger over time. In her youth she spent countless hours exploring the creeks and woods near her family’s home watching the wildlife that was typical in that part of the Midwest. Her curiosity about nature and love of the outdoors was inexhaustible. \rJoni studied fine art at Ohio State University and went on to art school at the Art Institute of Pittsburg, PA where she graduated with honors. Upon graduation she secured a position as greeting card illustrator with Hallmark Cards Inc. which required a re-location to the Kansas City area.\rDuring her early years at Hallmark, Joni focused her spare time on her love of dogs. She trained her own dogs (a Sheltie and Border Collies) for obedience, conformation and tracking trials hosted by the AKC (American Kennel Club). The art she did outside of her work at Hallmark reflected this love of dogs and won awards at numerous national art competitions, drawing the attention of the American Kennel Club who hired her to illustrate dogs for their magazine the AKC Gazette. \rJoni created illustrations for Hallmark Cards for twenty one years, having her work published and sold on Hallmark product in North America and Europe. As time passed, her artistic focus made the inevitable change to that of wildlife. In 2001 she decided that the time had come to dedicate her energies toward her passion for art and nature. She became a part-time employee at Hallmark, dividing her time between two very different artistic disciplines. Her wildlife paintings garnered immediate attention from national exhibitions and collectors and it became apparent that a full-time effort was needed to pursue this endeavor. Joni left Hallmark in the summer of 2006 to give her full attention to wildlife painting.\rJoni has traveled the world to gather reference materials for her paintings. In May of 2004 she and her husband Alan spent four weeks in southern Africa on photographic safari, traveling in the countries of Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa. It was a lifelong dream for Joni to see the great creatures of Africa living as they were meant to live in the wild. This trip has resulted in many paintings by which she hopes to stir the imaginations of anyone who dreams of that great land and shares her passion for it. \rConservation is the driving force behind all that motivates Joni as she paints. “The world is changing so rapidly. In this highly technological world, I believe that each of us still has a hard-wired need to understand from where it is we once came. But for some of us it lies a little closer to the surface than for others. I see a new wisdom arising within us. We are awakening from a great slumber of ignorance, and are beginning to realize that we are indeed the keepers of this world we live in. There are more conservation groups, more people supporting them, and more and more people taking an active role in what they now realize is a valuable asset to our kind. If my paintings can in any way help people enjoy nature and keep it in the forefront of their minds, I will have been a small part of this shift in human consciousness. That is what my paintings are all about”. \r
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/J421_1f895703-51b4-408f-a88f-8436166a8587.jpg?v=1633480509
georgia-okeeffe-purple-petunias-1925
Purple Petunias, 1925
© 2026
Georgia O’Keeffe Museum / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

About the Artist
The bold, poetic flower forms of Georgia O’Keeffe have become modern American classics. Working in an exaggerated scale, O’Keeffe achieved timeless abstractions by reducing her subjects to their simplest form and color.Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O’Keeffe studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the New York Art Students League under the direction of William Merritt Chase. At a time when women were strongly discouraged from pursuing careers, O’Keeffe embarked on a path that ultimately led to her recognition as the pre-eminent female American artist of the 20th century. Her work was first exhibited in 1917 by renowned photographer Alfred Steiglitz at his 291 Gallery in New York, where it created a sensation. She later married Steiglitz, whose unflagging support enabled O’Keeffe to focus on her extraordinary artistic talents.The artist spent the last forty years of her life in the desert of New Mexico finding inspiration in the rugged splendor of her surroundings. At seventeen, he began an apprenticeship in Andrea Verrocchio’s workshop, remaining there until he had far surpassed the talents of the early Renaissance master. Leonardo then left Florence for the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan, where he painted portraits, created The Last Supper fresco, and also started producing anatomical, botanical, and scientific sketches. Excited by the artistic renaissance occurring in Florence, Leonardo returned to that city and created his masterpieces - the Mona Lisa and Leda and the Swan (now lost).\r\rAlthough many of Leonardo’s commissions were never completed and several experimental frescoes no longer exist, extensive volumes of his experimental procedures, sketches, and theories have survived, some discovered only in the twentieth century.

In 1989, the Museum of Modern Art in New York had a major retrospective of his works.

Finally, The Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May 1994.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/W1730_6652f5d0-a5ca-4f4d-b024-d16acb84eb4f.jpg?v=1599061859
barry-hart-the-renegade
The Renegade
Image © Barry Hart

About the Artist
In the work of this photographic artist, heart is the operative term. So passionately is Barry involved with his art that every one of his photos goes far beyond the usual “image capture" by vividly expressing its subject’s unique emotion. In his vast and eclectic choice of theme, Barry communicates a full gamut of human sensation, from laughter to tears, from awe to understanding, and beyond. In short, the multi-layered character of this artist’s work far exceeds the one-dimensional nature of the medium he has chosen.

For inspiration Hart cites: "I’m endlessly fascinated by the interaction of horses and humans, especially humans of the cowboy variety. As a former horse trainer who continues to dabble at that art, I’m blessed with certain insights into equine behavior that give me something of an edge. Timing is everything and for me it’s a great blessing that I can feel a moment coming before it actually starts to happen- little things like a yawn; the roll of an eye, a faraway gaze, a sudden alertness, a struggle between man and animal, a misstep that’s likely to cause a fall."

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, this man-of-the-west found his way to the homeland of his heart following the siren’s song of the horse. From the East to the West and finally to the Southwestern desert, Barry sang for a living and learned the way of the horse for loving. A romantic to the core, he was ultimately drawn to the camera as a means of sharing the magnificent details he sees in every facet of God’s glorious creation.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/H2404_4a20dac2-17d6-4e2a-b231-0607e7286536.jpg?v=1599061907
john-james-audubon-louisiana-heron
Louisiana Heron
© 2026
McGaw Graphics, Inc.

About the Artist
John James Audubon was a French American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He is known for his expansive studies to document all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827–1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. This monumental work consists of 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species, made from engraved copper plates of various sizes depending on the size of the image. Audubon developed his own methods for drawing birds. First, he killed them using fine shot. He then used wires to prop them into a natural position, unlike the common method of many ornithologists, who prepared and stuffed the specimens into a rigid pose. When working on a major specimen like an eagle, he would spend up to four 15-hour days, preparing, studying, and drawing it. His paintings of birds are set true-to-life in their natural habitat. He often portrayed them as if caught in motion, especially feeding or hunting, basing his paintings on his extensive field observations. Audubon's influence on ornithology and natural history was far reaching. Nearly all later ornithological works were inspired by his artistry and high standards. Charles Darwin quoted Audubon three times in On the Origin of Species and also in later works. Despite some errors in field observations, he made a significant contribution to the understanding of bird anatomy and behavior through his field notes. Birds of America is still considered one of the greatest examples of book art.
© Amy Dixon\r
\r
About the Artist
Born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, Dixon now lives in Denver, Colorado with her 3 children and chocolate lab. One of the highlights of her diverse artistic career came in 2009, when the Iraq Museum International requested her image “Rough Wake” for the International Poster Exhibition at their museum in Baghdad. ”Rough Wake” would remain on display there for nearly two years. A collection of the 'Reflections' series was acquired in March 2014 and added to the newly remodeled NYU Surgical Center Endocrine and Diabetes Suite at the main patient facility; 550 First Avenue, NYC. The work was procured directly through exclusive NYU Artists Acquisitions Department. Not only was it was an honor, but also a high point in her career. Margaret’s artistic life has always been inspired by the Sea. From the shores of her New York birthplace and on to Chicago’s Lake Michigan- to the spectacular tropics of Tampa Bay where she currently resides, water has held an unwavering hold on her spirit — fluidity, intuition and reflective volatility. \r \rAs a successful professional artist and designer for more than two decades, she has cultivated a long list of devoted supporters. Trained by abstract expressionists, she paints quickly preferring a gestural style giving her paintings a whimsical fun energy. Her award winning work is well loved and collected worldwide as well as locally in the Northwest where she spends most her time.\r\rOver the years, Jennifer has lived in Seattle, Bellingham, and the Skagit Valley. She also enjoyed a childhood in the beautiful Puget Sound region where she spent every summer camping and hiking with her family in the Olympics, Cascades, and down to the Oregon Coast. Rather than reproduce a landscape, Ortenstone takes what she sees into her own psyche and creates many layers of underpainting on each canvas, until the final image emerges.\r\r"When I can dance with the colors and trust that each painting is the path to the next, my paintings undergo a transformative process. Acrylics are especially suited to my technique because of the speed with which images can emerge, be washed away and rapidly be brought forth again with new resonance," Ortenstone states. Her objective is to unite music, dance and color, creating her own melodies on canvas. As a co-founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists and architects who formed their own exhibition society and denounced the classical academic training of the time, his work embodied the high-keyed erotic, psychological and aesthetic preoccupations of fin-de-siècle Viennese intellectuals.\r\rKlimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. His interest in art was nurtured by his father, an engraver. His formal training began at the Kunst-gewerbeschule in Vienna, and later he worked as an artist-decorator in association with his brother. The primal forces of sexuality, regeneration, love and death form the dominant themes of Klimt’s work. In The Kiss, Klimt’s best known work, beautifully rendered figures float dreamlike in space, wrapped in an abstracted mosaic robe that veils graceful contours. The rhythmic flowing line and organic forms of Klimt’s unparalleled paintings became powerful influences on the Art Nouveau movement.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/K563_c0f41bea-283a-4209-8c01-49e7d95f64ae.jpg?v=1652299546
oleg-lugovskoy-brooklyn-bridge
Brooklyn Bridge
© Oleg Lugovskoy\r
\r
About the Artist
Originally from Russia, Oleg Lugovskoy Jr. is a young New York City-based photographer. When Maggiotto was 11, his father taught him basic darkroom techniques. In college, Maggiotto's interest in photography followed a fine art approach. He used only the then recently introduced Polaroid SX-70 camera, though his instructors dismissed his choice as "not serious." His work was exclusively about television, and the painterly color palette of the Polaroid format. Maggiotto was part of the artists' collective that formed the alternative space Hallwalls in the late seventies. Here his work was recognized and included in a 1979 Albright-Knox Art Gallery exhibition in Buffalo, New York. In 1980 he moved to Washington, D.C., to work at the National Endowment for the Arts.\r\rAbandoning the traditional paper-based photograph, Maggiotto began to print his work on large plates of plaster, a true departure from the precious, intimate realm of the SX-70's three-inch square. As in the earlier work, he takes the imagery from television.\r\rIn his auto series, Maggiotto harks back to the family business of auto repair and service. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York." Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol's will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts. In 1989, the Museum of Modern Art in New York had a major retrospective of his works. Finally, The Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May 1994.
©/®/™ 2026
The
Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.

Product Detail

Overall: 16" H x 13" W x 0.75" D

Overall Product Weight: 2.5lb.

Material: Glass

High-quality print on heavy paper

Printed with vibrant, color-fast inks

Framed in a contemporary style molding; available in black, gold, and white

Sawtooth hanger

Unmatted

About the Artist

Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928.
