His extraordinary draftsmanship, which stressed balance and clarity of outline, became a hallmark of his style. He worked in many media, preferring pastel to all others, and is best known for his intimate, immediate drawings of ballerinas and race horses.\r\rThe son of a wealthy Parisian banker, Degas originally planned to study law but opted to follow his early idol, the painter Jean Auguste Ingres, whose example pointed him in the direction of classical draftsmanship. After beginning his artistic studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Ingres, he started classes at the Êcole des Beaux-Arts but left in 1854 and went to Italy. He stayed there for five years, studying Italian art, especially Renaissance works.\r\rReturning to Paris, Degas came to know Manet, and in the late 1860s he turned to contemporary themes where his subjects frequently conveyed an element of psychological tension. He was fascinated with the movement of forms through space and often sketched dancers from the theater wings, capturing his subjects with an unrivaled immediacy.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
Klimt’s highly decorative, erotic female figures were influenced by an enormous range of sources: classical Greek art, Byzantine mosaics, late-medieval painting, the woodcuts of Albrecht Durer, photography and the Symbolist art of Max Klinger. An eccentric and masterful Surrealist in painting and in life, Dali wrote in his diary two years before entering art school in Madrid during the early 1920s: "Perhaps I’ll be despised and misunderstood, . . . but I’ll be a great genius." Throughout his life, Dali cultivated eccentricity and a predisposition towards narcissistic exhibitionism, claiming that his creative energies were derived from it. The spectrum of imagery from fantastic to nightmarish visions which Dali produced are the supreme evidence of these idiosyncrasies. Born in Figueras, Spain, Dali first studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Madrid and was influenced by metaphysical painters de Chirico and Carrà while there. Equally admiring the meticulous realism of the Pre-Raphaelites and French 19th century painters, he began to blend conceptual styles and techniques. Beginning in 1927, Dali exhibited in Madrid and Barcelona, earning a reputation for being one of the most promising younger painters. A visit to Paris in 1928 brought him into contact with Picasso and the Surrealists: Miró, Masson, Ernst, Tanguy and André Breton. Shortly thereafter he became a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. In 1941 he had his first retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Today you can find his work in museums around the world, as his works remain extremely popular.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/atavistic-vestiges-after-the-rain-1934-paper-629.jpg?v=1631718115
winslow-homer-the-nooning-c-1872
The Nooning, c. 1872
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
Winslow Homer (born Feb. 24, 1836, Boston, Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, 1910, Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. At seventeen, he began an apprenticeship in Andrea Verrocchio’s workshop, remaining there until he had far surpassed the talents of the early Renaissance master. Leonardo then left Florence for the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan, where he painted portraits, created The Last Supper fresco, and also started producing anatomical, botanical, and scientific sketches. Excited by the artistic renaissance occurring in Florence, Leonardo returned to that city and created his masterpieces - the Mona Lisa and Leda and the Swan (now lost).\r\rAlthough many of Leonardo’s commissions were never completed and several experimental frescoes no longer exist, extensive volumes of his experimental procedures, sketches, and theories have survived, some discovered only in the twentieth century. Leonardo da Vinci’s legacy affirms his position as the paragon of High Renaissance art.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/D2704_c8789e89-3da9-4021-9cb7-d6659e0a5964.jpg?v=1629823519
winslow-homer-dad-s-coming-1873
Dad’s Coming!, 1873
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
Winslow Homer (born Feb. 24, 1836, Boston, Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, 1910, Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. Boston, Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, 1910, Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. He served an apprenticeship with a Boston lithographer, then became a freelance illustrator in New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1860 and was elected a member in 1865. During a stay in France in 1866, he was attracted to French naturalism and Japanese prints, but they had little effect on his generally bright and happy work. He became a master of watercolour and his ability as an oil painter matured; he focused increasingly on solitary, withdrawn figures. He spent 1881 – 82 in the English village of Tynemouth, on the North Sea, where the coastal atmosphere, the sea, and the stoic people are the subjects of some of his most powerful images. In 1883 he moved permanently to Prouts Neck, and his dominant theme became the sea and the endless struggle against an uncaring nature. In his later years he continued to paint vigorously and in near-total isolation. Though he was recognized in his lifetime as a leading U.S. painter, appreciation of his enormous achievement came only after his death.\r
Winslow Homer
7.5x12 image on Vanni Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli or Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel"; March 1, 1445 – May 17, 1510) was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance (Quattrocento). Less than a hundred years later, this movement, under the patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici, was characterized by Giorgio Vasari as a "golden age", a thought, suitably enough, he expressed at the head of his Vita of Botticelli. His posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th century; since then his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting, and The Birth of Venus and Primavera rank now among the most familiar masterpieces of Florentine art.
Image © Kara Smith\r
\r
About the Artist
Kara Smith is an artist and educator living and working in the Berkshires. Benson's paintings of his daughters enjoying the fleeting days of a turn of the century summer holiday provided the artist the opportunity to explore the subtle nuances of light, a favored subject of the Impressionist movement.\r\rBorn in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1880 to 1883. In 1883, the artist traveled to Paris with childhood friend and fellow artist Edmund C. Tarbell where both men continued their studies at the Academie Julian. Returning to the United States, Benson taught at the Portland School of Art and later at the Museum School in Boston with Tarbell.\r\rBenson was accomplished in a variety of media including watercolor, pastel, aquatint and engraving and was a founding member of "The Ten," a group of ten well known American Impressionist painters from New York and Boston who exhibited together for nearly twenty years. Like his French counterparts, Benson frequently painted outdoors to capture the dynamic character of light. In the late 1890s the artist accepted a prestigious commission to work on the decoration of the Library of Congress and completed murals of Fours Seasons and Three Graces for the project. The Impressionist style, pioneered by Monet in France, enjoyed tremendous popularity with the American public and as a result, Benson attained a large measure of success as an artist during his lifetime.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/B1503_55a5b2ed-9d9a-4061-a645-98e6e309dcac.jpg?v=1641496296
pierre-auguste-renoir-mother-and-children-la-promenade-from-1874-until-1876
Mother and Children (La Promenade), from 1874 until 1876
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
The French Impressionist ideals of outdoor scenes depicted with sparkling color and light are embodied in the early works of Renoir, who began his career as a painter in a porcelain factory. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalized, he continued to paint and produced one of his most compelling works, The Starry Night. After his death, van Gogh's powerful compositions and expressive use of color greatly influenced Expressionism.
Vincent van Gogh
8.25x10.5 image on 11x14
