The youngest of five children, Andrew was a sickly child who had to be pulled out of school after contracting whooping cough. He was home-schooled by his parents in every subject including art education. His father, Newel Convers Wyeth, was a well known illustrator whose art was featured in many magazines, calendars, posters and murals. Andrew had a vivid memory and fantastic imagination that led to a great fascination for art. His father recognized an obvious raw talent that had to be nurtured. While his father taught him the basics of traditional academic drawing Andrew began painting watercolor studies of the rocky coast and the sea in Port Clyde Maine. He worked primarily in watercolors and egg tempera and often used shades of brown and grey. He held his first one-man show of watercolors painted around the family’s summer home at Port Clyde, Maine in 1937. It was a great success that would lead to many more. Wyeth married Betsey James at the age of twenty-two and had two boys, Nicholas who became an art dealer, and James who became the third generation artist in his family. Andrew was featured on the cover of American Artist as well as many other famous magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post that displayed his painting "The Hunter". His first solo museum exhibition was presented in 1951 at the Farnsworth Art Museum. Since then he has seen many more successes and is considered one of the most "collectible" living artist’s of our time.
© Ray Hendershot\r
\r
About the Artist
The Pennsylvania countryside, its inhabitants and their way of life provide the subject matter for this watercolor artist. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes. However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use. How many stories they must have to tell”. \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging. He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics. His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania. He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. He has been the recipient of many awards for his work in national and international exhibitions and has had numerous one-man shows. He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. Appropriately, it is one of his pictures, Impression: Sunrise, which gave the group of artists painting in this style its name.\r\rBorn in Paris, Monet attended L’Academie Suisse from 1859-60 and subsequently enrolled in the studio of Glenyre, where he met Renoir and Sisley, with whom he formed the nucleus of the Impressionist group. He organized the first Impressionist exhibit in 1874 and became the group’s leader, initiator and unswerving advocate. Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, planting the extensive gardens and lily ponds that would provide the inspiration for his later works.\r\rFrom 1890 he concentrated on a series of pictures in which he painted the same subject at different times of the day in different light. The most popular of these are the Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral series. He continued to travel widely, visiting London and Venice several times, yet increasingly he focused his attention on Giverny. July 22, 1882, Nyack, N.Y., U.S. — d. May 15, 1967, New York, N.Y.) was an American painter. He was initially trained as an illustrator but later studied painting with Robert Henri. In 1913 he exhibited in the Armory Show but spent much of his time on advertising art and illustrative etchings. In the mid 1920s he turned to watercolours and oil paintings of urban life. His House by the Railroad (1925) and Room in Brooklyn (1932) depict still, anonymous figures within geometric building forms, producing the haunting sense of isolation that was to be his hallmark. He used light to isolate figures and objects, as in Early Sunday Morning (1930) and Nighthawks (1942). His mature style was already formed in the 1920s; his later development showed constant refinement and an even greater mastery of light.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
Oscar Claude Monet is considered the archetypal Impressionist, with his devotion to painting the transient effects of light and color "en plein air" unwaveringly throughout his long career. There, the celebrated water gardens inspired the Water Lilies series that dominated his work for the remainder of his life.
© Ray Hendershot\r
\r
About the Artist
The Pennsylvania countryside, its inhabitants and their way of life provide the subject matter for this watercolor artist. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide. After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalized, he continued to paint and produced one of his most compelling works, The Starry Night. After his death, van Gogh's powerful compositions and expressive use of color greatly influenced Expressionism.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
Winslow Homer (born Feb. 24, 1836, Boston, Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, 1910, Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. During a stay in France in 1866, he was attracted to French naturalism and Japanese prints, but they had little effect on his generally bright and happy work. He became a master of watercolour and his ability as an oil painter matured; he focused increasingly on solitary, withdrawn figures. He spent 1881 – 82 in the English village of Tynemouth, on the North Sea, where the coastal atmosphere, the sea, and the stoic people are the subjects of some of his most powerful images. In 1883 he moved permanently to Prouts Neck, and his dominant theme became the sea and the endless struggle against an uncaring nature.
© Zhen-Huan Lu\r
\r
About the Artist
Zhen-Huan Lu is an American artist of Chinese descent. For hours, he played in the barn, worked by his grandma’s side in the garden and helped his grandpa sort pigs. After college his life took a different direction. With a photography degree in hand, he traded the quiet life of rural America for a fast-paced life in the city. As a commercial advertising photographer in St. Louis, Trent worked with some of the largest blue-chip companies in the country. After 15 years as a successful advertising photographer, he returned to his hometown to raise his two boys in Illinois. The landscape he found there however, was very different from the one he remembered. Gone were the days of the small farms. Wooden barns and fence lines were disappearing, making way for housing and business developments. His grandfather had passed by this time and the new owners of his property were getting ready to tear down the barns. It was at that point he decided to turn his camera to the great beauty of the Midwest landscape before it disappeared. \r\rTrent Foltz received his Bachelors of Arts in Photography and his Bachelors of Science in Forestry from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He has worked for the National Park Service and National Forest Service before opening a commercial advertising photography studio in St. Louis, Missouri. Tall and soft-spoken, Robert possesses sincerity and courtesy that reflect his Idaho farm upbringing. There, amidst the wide open plains bounded by rugged mountains, his appreciation for nature was sparked. A contemplative, quiet individual, Robert discovered art as a way to freely express his feelings. His practical background and belief in discipline led him to first earn a Bachelor of Science degree with teaching credentials in Art from Eastern Oregon State College and then a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center School of Design in California. At Art Center, Robert received a full scholarship and majored in Illustration and graduated with honors.\r\rRobert prefers painting ‘en plein aire’ to best express his immediate impression of each subject. Plein aire painting allows him to capture the light and color effects of creation’s order. He frequently uses vivid colors and high-keyed values that reveal a spiritually inspired joy. Robert’s paintings have a characteristic mood and energy about them that invite the viewer to experience the beauty he sees in nature. Several Trips abroad, including China, Canada, and the Tuscan countryside, have also inspired many canvases. In recent years, Robert has become a highly sought-after instructor and he teaches multiple workshops a year. He has been profiled in numerous magazine articles including Western Art Collector, Southwest Art, Wildlife Art, Big Sky Journal and Art of the West. Mark first discovered his love and skill for photography 5 years ago when his wife bought him his first camera for his 40th birthday. He has found that his favorite subject is deer, especially fallow deer, which can be found across the UK. He particularly enjoys capturing these lovely animals on misty Autumn mornings. It is important to Mark to always include the natural habitats of his animal subjects in his photographs, and not just go for the close up shots. He is very patient while shooting, finding that when he stays with the animals he is able to get the best shots. Mark’s award-winning photographs have been published in national newspapers and magazines. When she isn’t photographing with husband Dean or daughter Crickett, she is making Mixed Media art in her studio, staying up way too late on Photoshop, or running art workshops both here and abroad. Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibits at Southern Vermont Arts Center, and published in Making Journals by Hand [Jason Thompson, Quarry Books] and Collage Journeys [Jane Davies, Watson-Guptill]. In March 2010 her Digital Art was featured in an 8 page article in Somerset Digital Studio. "My work often features two of my passions—France and the bucolic countryside of upstate New York.
