In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York."

Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people.

In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol’s will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts. Beginning in 1951, he worked with Eugene Delcroix, a N.O. photographer who was a master of light and composition, and who specialized in soft focus images. In 1971, he studied with Ansel Adams in California at one of the last courses the artist himself taught. He has also been a pupil of Michael A. Smith of Ottsville, Pennsylvania-a master of large format photography-who in 1986 photographed New Orleans for the Historic collection. In 1999 he participated in a Santa Fe workshop on digital photography.\r\rBert’s first one man show was in 1976, at the Gallery Studio 8 in New Orleans. The images in that exposition were mostly scenics in the Adams tradition. In 1978, he began experimenting with using X ray as an art medium, developing the technique of taking radiographs of shells, flowers, and other objects and making B + W positive prints of them. Although the technique is not original, it is quite difficult and not widely done. He wrote an article describing the technique, which was published in Applied Radiology, and articles about his methods have appeared in Medical World News, Art Center and the Free University in N.O., and for 9 years taught a course in advanced darkroom techniques in the Univ. College of Tulane University.\r\rSince 1986 he has been using Cibachrome techniques to make radiographic images in color, including montages of straight photo images with xrays.\r\rBeginning in 1985 he worked with high contrast internegatives and have a large collection of line derivations and solarizations, mainly of historic buildings.\r\rFrom 1987-1997, he became interested in holography and took courses in the subject from Dr. T. Jeong at Lake Forest College in Illinois and Jeffrey Murray at the Holography Institute in Petaluma, California. He started the Holography research Laboratory at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in N.O. and pursued the uses of holography in medicine, especially in education. He has developed techniques of making 3D images of bones, medical models, and human tissue which had been preserved by plastination, and had shows of his work in galleries in the USA, Scotland, and Hungary. His goal was to make a medical text illustrated with holograms. Unfortunately the field of educational and art holography did not progress. The extreme difficulty and cost of making and reproducing the images and the need for special lighting to view them impeded growth. In 1997, AGFA, the main producer of high quality holographic films and plates discontinued production, and Myers decided to abandon holography and concentrate his work in conventional photography, especially using digital technology to make color prints of Xray images.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/M2010_065361ef-88b3-4939-a68c-ea7732b14d8b.jpg?v=1597348098
bert-myers-neptunes-garden-i
Neptune's Garden I
© Bert Myers\r
\r
About the Artist
Bert Myers is a retired academic physician (Professor of Surgery at LSUMC) who has long had a serious interest in photography as an art medium. In 1997, AGFA, the main producer of high quality holographic films and plates discontinued production, and Myers decided to abandon holography and concentrate his work in conventional photography, especially using digital technology to make color prints of Xray images.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/M2011_cc05546e-53b1-46ec-9422-9e29af1e0ca6.jpg?v=1597348100
eric-balint-tapas-i
Tapas I
© 2026
DAG, Inc., Atlanta, USA

About the Artist
Born in Russia, Eric participated frequently in art programs and published his work in children's magazines, continually meeting with enthusiastic response. Apprenticed to a woodcut engraver at 15, he became a student of the leading ukiyo-e master, Katsukawa Shunsho, in 1778. His first published works, prints of kabuki actors, appeared the following year. He soon turned to historical and landscape subjects and prints of children. He developed an eclectic style and achieved success with book illustrations and surimono prints ("printed things" for special occasions, such as cards and announcements), picture books and novelettes, erotic books and album prints, paintings, and ink sketches. He experimented with Western-style perspective and use of colour and later concentrated on samurai themes and Chinese subjects. His Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (1826 – 33), a series of prints, marked a summit in the history of the Japanese landscape print; in grandeur of concept and skill of execution there was little approaching it before and nothing to surpass it later. She began her art career in 1993 by starting her own decorative painting business, Paint Smart. While painting everything from furniture to wall murals she worked with clients and focused on their needs while developing into a talented artist. After twelve very successful years as a decorative painter she turned her focus toward fine art. In 2000, she began studying with local artist Andy Braitman and flourished under his direction for the next six years. Recognized by her spontaneous brushwork, diversity, and candid use of color her viewers seem to relate and connect to her work. Her paintings convey a certain energy and spontaneity that draws the viewer into her work whether it be a landscape, interior, still life or abstract. Her style brings energy and excitement to the canvas in a very creative, artistic way that is all her own. Although Libby spends a great deal of her time painting she also finds joy in sharing her knowledge with others by teaching workshops or helping individuals. While she loves painting outdoors in nature she spends most of her time devoted to painting in her home studio. Libby has never been content to settle in with just one style of painting, rather she challenges herself to experience and develop as an artist. She broadens her artistic experiences by studying with other well known artists in and around the country as well as abroad. She began her art career in 1993 by starting her own decorative painting business, Paint Smart. While painting everything from furniture to wall murals she worked with clients and focused on their needs while developing into a talented artist. After twelve very successful years as a decorative painter she turned her focus toward fine art. In 2000, she began studying with local artist Andy Braitman and flourished under his direction for the next six years.\r\rRecognized by her spontaneous brushwork, diversity, and candid use of color her viewers seem to relate and connect to her work. Her paintings convey a certain energy and spontaneity that draws the viewer into her work whether it be a landscape, interior, still life or abstract. Her style brings energy and excitement to the canvas in a very creative, artistic way that is all her own.\r\rAlthough Libby spends a great deal of her time painting she also finds joy in sharing her knowledge with others by teaching workshops or helping individuals. He was educated at University College School, London. He then received his legal training on the European continent, first from Edward von Steinle and then from Giovanni Costa. When in Florence, aged 24, where he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti, he painted the procession of the Cimabue Madonna through the Borgo Allegri. He lived in Paris from 1855 to 1859, where he met Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet.

In 1860, he moved to London, where he associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. He designed Elizabeth Barrett Browning's tomb for Robert Browning in the English Cemetery, Florence in 1861. In 1864 he became an associate of the Royal Academy and in 1878 he became its President (1878–96). His 1877 sculpture, Athlete Wrestling with a Python, was considered at its time to inaugurate a renaissance in contemporary British sculpture, referred to as the New Sculpture. His paintings represented Britain at the great 1900 Paris Exhibition.

Leighton was knighted at Windsor in 1878, and was created a baronet eight years later. He was the first painter to be given a peerage, in the New Year Honours List of 1896. The patent creating him Baron Leighton of Stretton in the County of Shropshire, was issued on 24 January 1896; Leighton died the next day of angina pectoris.

As he was unmarried, after his death his Barony was extinguished after existing for only a day; this is a record in the Peerage. His house in Holland Park, London has been turned into a museum, the Leighton House Museum. It contains a number of his drawings and paintings, as well as some of his sculptures (including Athlete Wrestling with a Python). The house also features many of Leighton's inspirations, including his collection of Isnik tiles. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes. However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use. How many stories they must have to tell”. \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging. He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics. His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania. He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. The rhythmic flowing line and organic forms of Klimt’s unparalleled paintings became powerful influences on the Art Nouveau movement.
©/®/™ 2026
The
Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.

About the Artist
Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928.

Dixon approaches painting much as she does her life...intuitively with free expression. "Anything is possible if the art spirit is right." Direct observation of everyday life and a keen sense of what will work on canvas fuel her passion for exploring fresh subjects as well as revisiting old favorites. The work is about color, immediacy and an intuitive response to the world around her. Inspiration is drawn from paying attention to the moment and recognizing ideas that connect with the soul...color, form, mood, light, music, conversation, dreams. Dixon's personal journey challenges her to investigate peace, harmony, chaos, fears, stress and laughter of the day... to reveal and paint in response to this LIFE and all its complexities. Going back to her Louisiana roots and the familiar laissez le bon temps rouler...that is, let the good times roll on the canvas! ...and she does.\r\rAmy Dixon received her BA in Studio Art from Newcomb College of Tulane University. Rather than reproduce a landscape, Ortenstone takes what she sees into her own psyche and creates many layers of underpainting on each canvas, until the final image emerges.\r\r"When I can dance with the colors and trust that each painting is the path to the next, my paintings undergo a transformative process. Acrylics are especially suited to my technique because of the speed with which images can emerge, be washed away and rapidly be brought forth again with new resonance," Ortenstone states. Her objective is to unite music, dance and color, creating her own melodies on canvas. The artists who have inspired her are Rothko, Frankenthaler and Oliveira.\r\rOrtenstone has lived in Minnesota (her birthplace), Mexico and New Mexico. She holds a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and an M.A. from the University of Mexico through the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Appropriately, it is one of his pictures, Impression: Sunrise, which gave the group of artists painting in this style its name.\r\rBorn in Paris, Monet attended L’Academie Suisse from 1859-60 and subsequently enrolled in the studio of Glenyre, where he met Renoir and Sisley, with whom he formed the nucleus of the Impressionist group. He organized the first Impressionist exhibit in 1874 and became the group’s leader, initiator and unswerving advocate. Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, planting the extensive gardens and lily ponds that would provide the inspiration for his later works.\r\rFrom 1890 he concentrated on a series of pictures in which he painted the same subject at different times of the day in different light. The most popular of these are the Haystacks and Rouen Cathedral series. He continued to travel widely, visiting London and Venice several times, yet increasingly he focused his attention on Giverny. There, the celebrated water gardens inspired the Water Lilies series that dominated his work for the remainder of his life.
© Dawne Polis\r
\r
About the Artist
After 18 years of teaching high school art, Dawne Polis retired to Everafter Farm in Shushan, N.Y., where she now lives her "dream life" of making art every day. As a co-founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists and architects who formed their own exhibition society and denounced the classical academic training of the time, his work embodied the high-keyed erotic, psychological and aesthetic preoccupations of fin-de-siècle Viennese intellectuals.\r\rKlimt was born in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna. His interest in art was nurtured by his father, an engraver. His formal training began at the Kunst-gewerbeschule in Vienna, and later he worked as an artist-decorator in association with his brother. The primal forces of sexuality, regeneration, love and death form the dominant themes of Klimt’s work. In The Kiss, Klimt’s best known work, beautifully rendered figures float dreamlike in space, wrapped in an abstracted mosaic robe that veils graceful contours. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York." Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York." Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol's will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts.
