In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York." Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956. The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal. At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world. The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring. Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people. In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol's will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts. In 1989, the Museum of Modern Art in New York had a major retrospective of his works. After his death, van Gogh's powerful compositions and expressive use of color greatly influenced Expressionism.

Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

Product Detail

Overall: 16" H x 13" W x 0.75" D

Overall Product Weight: 2.5lb.

Material: Glass

High quality print on heavy paper

Printed with vibrant, color-fast inks

Framed in a contemporary style molding; available in black, white, and gold

Sawtooth hanger

Unmatted

About the Artist

Born in Weymouth , MA was a Boston painter known for his floral garden scenes and still lifes. Although much of his work, keeping with the Boston School style, depicted in a realistic way, his thick, impasto brush strokes and bright colorful sun-lit paintings showed his acceptance of Impressionism. He studied at M.I.T. with Cormon, Laurens, and Gervais. In 1884 he went to Paris and Italy , and concentrated on still lifes, often working with his good friend Edmund Tarbell, also a Boston painter. Graves and Tarbell roomed together in Europe , where they both studied still-life painting. Returning to Boston in 1885 he became a member of the faculty of Cowles Art School where fellow-faculty member Childe Hassam, an impressionist, became an influence on his work. In 1887, Graves went to paris where he enrolled at the Academie Julian to study figures with Jean Paul Laurens. From 1891 most of his paintings were of floral garden scenes, often with female figures in bright sun, showing the influence of European impressionism. Travels between Paris and New England continued throughout his career, and in 1891, he opened a school in Boston , which ultimately moved to Kennebunkport , Maine and closed in 1902. He also did work in Paris from 1902 to 1905. Graves was an Associate of the National Academy (1926) and a member of the Salmagundi Club (1909), American Art Association of Paris; North Shore Arts Association, MA; Copley Society of Boston; National Arts Club (Life Member); Boston Society of Watercolor Painters; Boston Art Students Association; Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts; Boston Art Club; and the Artists Fund. Awards include Mass. Charitable Mechanics Association (1887); Exposition des Beaux Arts, Paris (1905 medal); Salmagundi Club. One man exhibitions include Leonard and Company (1899); Copley (1917); Brockton Public Library, Brockton , MA (1926) Babcock Galleries, NYC (1927); Vose Galleries of Boston (1924, 1925, 1929, 2932); Store Museum , Kennebunk , ME (1979). His work is represented at the National Arts Club, New York and The Portland Art Museum, Portland Maine . Married to Montie Aldrich, October 1, 1886. Two children. Though his paintings sold for princely sums, Bierstadt was not held in particularly high esteem by critics of his day. His use of uncommonly large canvases was thought to be an egotistical indulgence, as his paintings would invariably dwarf those of his contemporaries when they were displayed together. The romanticism evident in his choices of subject and in his use of light was felt to be excessive by contemporary critics. His paintings emphasized atmospheric elements like fog, clouds and mist to accentuate and complement the feel of his work. Bierstadt sometimes changed details of the landscape to inspire awe. His family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1833. He studied painting with the members of the Düsseldorf School in Düsseldorf, Germany from 1853 to 1857. He taught drawing and painting briefly before devoting himself to painting. Bierstadt began making paintings in New England and upstate New York. In 1859, he traveled westward in the company of a Land Surveyor for the U.S. government, returning with sketches that would result in numerous finished paintings. In 1863 he returned West again, in the company of the author Fitz Hugh Ludlow, whose wife he would later marry. He continued to visit the American West throughout his career. The colors he used are also not always true. He painted what he believed is the way things should be: water is ultramarine, vegetation is lush and green, etc. The shift from foreground to background was very dramatic and there was almost no middle distance.[citation needed] Nonetheless, his paintings remain popular. His extensive body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. Dürer began his training as a draughtsman in the goldsmith's workshop of his father. When he was 15 years old he worked as an apprentice to the painter and woodcut illustrator Michael Wohlgemuth. After working for three years under Wohlgemuth, he traveled through the Netherlands, Alsace, and to Basle, Switzerland, where he completed his first authenticated woodcut. In 1494, he married Agnes Frey, the daughter of a merchant and took his first trip to Italy, a journey that would greatly influence his art. He became very influenced by and involved with the Renaissance, and his graphics ultimately influenced the art of the Italian Renaissance that had originally inspired his own efforts. In the early 1500’s Durer traveled to Italy again, and became very inspired by the work of Giovanni Bellini. He also worked for the Holy Roman emperor Maximilian I for many years. By 1515, he had achieved an international reputation as an artist when he exchanged works with the illustrious High Renaissance painter Raphael. His skill in drawing was apparently evident by the age of 11. His father could not afford his training, but in 1839 his departement gave him a grant to go to Paris. This enabled him to register at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts the following October as a pupil of Fran?ois-Edouard Picot. At his first Salon in 1843 he presented Agony in the Garden (Valenciennes, Mus. B.-A.) and won second place in the Prix de Rome competition (after L?on B?nouville, also a pupil of Picot) in 1845 with Christ at the Praetorium (Paris, Ecole N. Sup. B.-A.). Both Cabanel and B?nouville were able to go to Rome, as there was a vacancy from the previous year. Cabanel's Death of Moses (untraced), an academic composition, painted to comply with the regulations of the Ecole de Rome, was exhibited at the Salon of 1852. The pictures he painted for Alfred Bruyas, his chief patron at this time (and, like Cabanel, a native of Montpellier), showed more clearly the direction his art had taken during his stay in Italy. Albayd?, Angel of the Evening, Chiarruccia and Velleda (all in Montpellier, Mus. Fabre) were the first of many mysterious or tragic heroines painted by Cabanel and show his taste for the elegiac types and suave finish of the Florentine Mannerists.

Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

Product Detail

Overall: 16" H x 13" W x 0.75" D

Overall Product Weight: 2.5lb.

Material: Glass

High quality print on heavy paper

Printed with vibrant, color-fast inks

Framed in a contemporary style molding; available in black, white, and gold

Sawtooth hanger

Unmatted

About the Artist

Alfred Sisley, a French Impressionist painter, was born in Paris in 1839. His English parents intended for him to go into the financial industry, but Sisley chose instead to dedicate himself to painting. Sisley has been compared to his longtime friend and colleague, Claude Monet, whom he met while studying at the Gleyre studio in Paris in the early 1860s. Like Monet, Sisley devoted most of his career to painting Impressionistic landscapes. Sisley's style differed somewhat from that of the Impressionist school; his brushstroke was firm and created a higher definition of form, a technique reminiscent of English landscape painters. Most of his paintings, however, are of scenes in and around Paris. His most significant series of landscapes depict the flood of 1876 at Port-Marley. He was able to record diverse light effects by painting in the open-air at different times of the day. He was especially revered for his landscapes depicting lyrical scenes of everyday life. Hiroshige was born in Edo (now Tokyo). When he was orphaned at the age of twelve, he assumed his father's job as firefighter. Soon, however, he was inspired by the prints of the esteemed artist Hokusai to become an artist. Hiroshige apprenticed himself to the artist Utagawa Toyohiro and for many years continued working as both a firefighter and an artist. In 1823, he was finally able to turn his firefighting duties over to his brother and devote himself full-time to painting. Many of the Hiroshige prints in our collection were taken from Hiroshige's final, masterful series entitled One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. They were produced between 1856 and 1858 when Hiroshige was an accomplished artist at the height of his skill and renown. Hiroshige became one of the most popular and prolific artists of his period, producing 5400 prints over his lifetime.
