The waters and skies surrounding Bainbridge Island and the San Juan archipelago of Washington state provide endless inspiration for Kelly Johnston’s landscape-based paintings.
Bold color and loosely dripping paint combine to emulate the interaction of sunlight on the water’s surface as well as the abstract qualities of clouds and sky. Working with water soluble oils, Johnston uses swirls of color, fluid brushstrokes and atmospheric depth to evoke sunlight and waves at sea.
Kelly Johnston earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Washington in 2000. In addition to painting, she has worked in the interior design industry and created a line of handmade jewelry. Kelly returned to painting in 2013 and has exhibited her work throughout the Pacific Northwest. Kelly lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington with her husband and two children.
