An eccentric and masterful Surrealist in painting and in life, Dali wrote in his diary two years before entering art school in Madrid during the early 1920s: "Perhaps I’ll be despised and misunderstood, . . . but I’ll be a great genius." Throughout his life, Dali cultivated eccentricity and a predisposition towards narcissistic exhibitionism, claiming that his creative energies were derived from it. The spectrum of imagery from fantastic to nightmarish visions which Dali produced are the supreme evidence of these idiosyncrasies. Born in Figueras, Spain, Dali first studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Madrid and was influenced by metaphysical painters de Chirico and Carrà while there. Equally admiring the meticulous realism of the Pre-Raphaelites and French 19th century painters, he began to blend conceptual styles and techniques. Beginning in 1927, Dali exhibited in Madrid and Barcelona, earning a reputation for being one of the most promising younger painters. A visit to Paris in 1928 brought him into contact with Picasso and the Surrealists: Miró, Masson, Ernst, Tanguy and André Breton. Shortly thereafter he became a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. In 1941 he had his first retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Today you can find his work in museums around the world, as his works remain extremely popular.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/apparition-of-face-and-fruit-dish-on-a-beach-paper-851.jpg?v=1631717948
john-singer-sargent-carnation-lily-lily-rose
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

About the Artist
John Singer Sargent, an American painter, was born in Italy but spent most of his adult life in London. His vivid recollections of Russian Jewish village scenes and incidents in his private life were treated with a touch of humor and fantasy. Strong, bright colors portray the world with a dreamlike, non-realistic simplicity and surreal inventiveness. This fusion of fantasy, religion and nostalgia filled his work with a childlike, joyous quality. Born in what is now Belarus, Chagall studied art in St. Petersburg. From 1910-14 he lived in Paris and absorbed the works of leading Cubist, Surrealist and Fauvist painters. From 1918-19 he was director of the Art Academy in Vitsyebsk and then became art director of the Moscow Jewish State Theater, where he painted several murals in the theater lobby and executed sets for several productions. In 1923, he moved permanently to France, except for a brief residence in the U.S. during World War II. Chagall expanded to other forms of art including ceramics, mosaics and stained glass. Among his most famous building decorations are the ceiling of the Paris Opera House, two murals in the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, a glass window at the United Nations in New York and decorations in the Vatican.

© 2026 McGaw Graphics, Inc.

About the Artist

Ando Hiroshige was one of the most famous Japanese artists of the Ukiyo-e school. He was especially revered for his landscapes depicting lyrical scenes of everyday life. Hiroshige was born in Edo (now Tokyo). When he was orphaned at the age of twelve, he assumed his father's job as firefighter. Soon, however, he was inspired by the prints of the esteemed artist Hokusai to become an artist. Hiroshige apprenticed himself to the artist Utagawa Toyohiro and for many years continued working as both a firefighter and an artist. In 1823, he was finally able to turn his firefighting duties over to his brother and devote himself full-time to painting. Many of the Hiroshige prints in our collection were taken from Hiroshige's final, masterful series entitled One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. They were produced between 1856 and 1858 when Hiroshige was an accomplished artist at the height of his skill and renown. Hiroshige became one of the most popular and prolific artists of his period, producing 5400 prints over his lifetime. Though Hiroshige's work was not as daring as that of Hokusai, the artist he so admired, Hiroshige was revered then and now for his poetic chronicles of daily life in 19th-century (born July 10, 1830, St. Thomas, Danish West Indies — died Nov. 13, 1903, Paris, France) was a West Indian-born French painter. The son of a prosperous Jewish merchant, he moved to Paris in 1855. His earliest Unstretched Canvases are broadly painted figure paintings and landscapes; these show the careful observation of nature that was to remain a characteristic of his art. In 1871 he took a house in Pontoise, in the countryside outside Paris. These surroundings formed the theme of his art for some 30 years. Pissarro's leading motifs during the 1870s and 1880s were houses, factories, trees, haystacks, fields, labouring peasants, and river scenes. He was fascinated with the movement of forms through space and often sketched dancers from the theater wings, capturing his subjects with an unrivaled immediacy.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

About the Artist
Edouard Manet, a French painter, is considered to be the senior figure among the artists of the Impressionist School. Manet studied the works of Dutch artist Frans Hals in Holland in 1872. Hals taught him to liberate his brushstrokes when creating and to paint with more energy and verve. These techniques provided a basis for Manet to become one of the founders of the Impressionist Movement.

One of Manet's most significant works is "Luncheon on the Grass," which depicts a nude model in the presence of two men. This piece provoked and offended the critics of the time who claimed it was pornographic and immoral. The Salon, one of the most influential galleries in Paris at the time, refused to exhibit the work, but it proved to be one of the pivotal works of art in the Salon des Refuges, a gallery whose specific reason for existence was to display the rejected works of leading artists.

Many of the young Impressionists of the time followed Manet's lead and broke away from the traditional artistic styles of the past. This trend eventually served as the basis for modern art. His goal was to demonstrate "optical mixture." He accomplished this by placing small dots of contrasting colors next to one another in his paintings. The effect is one of pure color that blends in the viewer's eye, not on the palette or Unstretched Canvas. This technique is seen in the painting, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." This painting was shown in the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886. Seurat made countless drawings and oil sketches of different aspects of his initial ideas that were ultimately included in his final Unstretched Canvases. He was careful to balance his compositions so that no single aspect of the painting dominated the whole. Seurat's paintings proved to be a great influence on the Post-Impressionists, including Van Gogh, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec. An aristocratic family (descendants of the Counts of Toulouse) that had recently fallen on hard times, the Toulouse-Lautrecs were feeling the effects of the inbreeding of past generations; the Comte and Comtesse themselves were first cousins, and Henri suffered from a number of congenital health conditions attributed to this tradition of inbreeding (see below). A younger brother was born to the family on 28 August 1867, but died the following year.

Throughout his career, which spanned less than 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec created 737 Unstretched Canvases,
275 watercolors, 363 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings, some ceramic and stained glass work, and an unknown number of lost works. Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gaugin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. His debt to the Impressionists, in particular the more figurative painters Manet and Degas, is apparent. In the works of Toulouse-Lautrec can be seen many parallels to Manet's bored barmaid at A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and the behind-the-scenes ballet dancers of Degas. He excelled at capturing people in their working environment, with the colour and the movement of the gaudy night-life present, but the glamour stripped away. He was masterly at capturing crowd scenes in which the figures are highly individualised. At the time that they were painted, the individual figures in his larger paintings could be identified by silhouette alone, and the names of many of these characters have been recorded. His treatment of his subject matter, whether as portraits, scenes of Parisian night-life, or intimate studies, has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate.

Toulous-Lautrec's skilled depiction of people relied on his painterly style which is highly linear and gives great emphasis to contour. He often applied the paint in long, thin brushstrokes which often leave much of the board on which they are painted showing through.

Many of his works may best be described as drawings in coloured paint.

After Toulouse-Lautrec's death, his mother, the Comtesse Adèle Toulouse-Lautrec, and Maurice Joyant, his art dealer, promoted his art. His mother contributed funds for a museum to be built in Albi, his birthplace, to house his works. As of 2005, his paintings had sold for as much as US$14.5 million.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

About the Artist
Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa was born in Albi, Tarn in the Midi-Pyrénées région of France, the firstborn child of Comte Alphonse and Comtesse Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec. Born to prosperous parents, he proved unsuited to the family business and at age 25 was given a small allowance to pursue art training. He traveled frequently and painted topographical landscapes throughout his career, but he preferred making small oil sketches and drawings from nature; from these he produced large finished paintings for exhibition. By the 1850s he had achieved critical success and a large income, and he was generous to less successful artists. His naturalistic oil sketches are now more highly regarded than his more self-consciously poetic finished paintings. He is often associated with the Barbizon school. A master of tonal gradation and soft edges, he prepared the way for the Impressionist landscape painters and had an important influence on Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Berthe His later works, particularly his formal figure paintings of women, show a more disciplined approach and a break from contemporary themes to more timeless subjects.

In 1862, he entered the studio of Gleyre and formed lasting friendships with other Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. He endured much hardship early in his career but achieved success as a portraitist in the late 1870s. After visiting Italy in 1881-82, he abandoned the Impressionist ideal and developed a softer and more supple kind of handling which is evident in his pictures of young girls in softly colored settings.

He is perhaps the best-loved of all the Impressionists for his cheerful subject matter - pretty children, flowers, lovely women - and their instant appeal. He once wrote, "Why shouldn'
t art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world." As a great worshiper of the female form, he mused, "I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it.\
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

About the Artist
John Singer Sargent, an American painter, was born in Italy but spent most of his adult life in London. Bastien-Lepage grew up on a farm. Although his earliest efforts in drawing were encouraged, his parents violently objected when he decided to become a professional artist. To mollify them he worked for a time as a postal clerk in Paris while studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1868 he left the civil service and was accepted into Alexandre Cabanel's atelier. At age thirteen, he began a three-year apprenticeship with a lithographer and then his interest in painting led him to take an art course at the École Nationale de Dessin. Like most other fledgling artists, Chéret studied the techniques of various artists, past and present, by visiting Paris museums. From 1859 to 1866, he was trained in lithography in London, England, where he was strongly influenced by the British approach to poster design and printing. On returning to France, Chéret created vivid poster ads for the cabarets, music halls, and theaters such as the Eldorado, the Olympia, the Folies Bergères, Théâtre de l'Opéra, the Alcazar d'Été and the Moulin Rouge. His works were influenced by the scenes of frivolity depicted in the works of Rococo artists such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Antoine Watteau. So much in demand was he, that he expanded his business to providing advertisements for the plays of touring troupes, municipal festivals, and then for beverages and liquors, perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Eventually he became a major advertising force, adding the railroad companies and a number of manufacturing businesses to his client list.As his work became more popular and his large posters displaying modestly free-spirited females found a larger audience, pundits began calling him the "father of the women's liberation." Females had previously been depicted in art as prostitutes or puritans. The women of Chéret's posters, joyous, elegant and lively—'Cherettes', as they were popularly called—were neither. It was freeing for the women of Paris, and heralded a noticeably more open atmosphere in Paris where women were able to engage in formerly taboo activities, such as wearing low-cut bodices and smoking in public. These 'Cherettes' were widely seen and recognised, and a writer of the time said "It is difficult to conceive of Paris without its 'Cheréts' (sic)."In 1895, Chéret created the Maîtres de l'Affiche collection, a significant art publication of smaller sized reproductions featuring the best works of ninety-seven Parisian artists. His success inspired an industry that saw the emergence of a new generation of poster designers and painters such as Charles Gesmar and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. One of his students was Georges de Feure. In his old age Jules Chéret retired to the pleasant climate of the French Riviera at Nice. He died in 1932 at the age of ninety-six and was interred in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris. He was awarded the Légion d'honneur by the French Government in 1890 for his outstanding contributions to the graphic arts. Although his paintings earned him a certain respect, it was his work creating advertising posters, taken on just to pay his bills but eventually his dedication, for which he is remembered today.

Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner

About the Artist
Martin Johnson Heade (born Aug. 11, 1819, Lumberville, Pa., U.S. — died Sept. 4, 1904, St. Augustine, Fla.) was a U.S. painter.
