He was a self taught artist who began painting in 1880 after a twenty-year career as a customs officer. While attempting to seek recognition for his work, he was rejected by the Salon in 1885, but was accepted the following year by the jury-free Societe des Artistes Independants.\r\rRousseau's art has generally been considered avant-garde, although there is evidence of the Neo-Classicist influence in his precise definition of forms and the smooth finish to his paintings. Knowing little about linear or atmospheric perspective, he laid the elements in his scenes across the picture surface, suggesting space by a succession of planes stacked one on top of the other up the canvas, so that forms on the horizon were as crisply defined as those nearby.\r\rHis paintings were very tautly organized in two-dimensional terms, and his simplification and stylized renderings struck a chord with vanguard painters who rejected naturalistic depictions, first with Gauguin and his circle, and later with Picasso and his friends. Today his widely appealing work can be seen in major museum collections around the world. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes.  However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs.  The real subject is their surfaces.  “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use.  How many stories they must have to tell”.  \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging.  He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics.  His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania.  He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.  He has been the recipient of many awards for his work in national and international exhibitions and has had numerous one-man shows.  He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalized, he continued to paint and produced one of his most compelling works, The Starry Night. He was especially revered for his landscapes depicting lyrical scenes of everyday life.Hiroshige was born in Edo (now Tokyo). When he was orphaned at the age of twelve, he assumed his father's job as firefighter. Soon, however, he was inspired by the prints of the esteemed artist Hokusai to become an artist. Hiroshige apprenticed himself to the artist Utagawa Toyohiro and for many years continued working as both a firefighter and an artist. In 1823, he was finally able to turn his firefighting duties over to his brother and devote himself full-time to painting.Many of the Hiroshige prints in our collection were taken from Hiroshige's final, masterful series entitled One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. They were produced between 1856 and 1858 when Hiroshige was an accomplished artist at the height of his skill and renown.Hiroshige became one of the most popular and prolific artists of his period, producing 5400 prints over his lifetime. As he studied the Renaissance master’s paintings his thoughts were only on how much he enjoyed doing it.  In his twenties, this Minnesota native began concentrating on painting animals and wildlife, discovering that people really appreciated the realism and natural beauty he brought to his subjects.  He painted wildlife in natural settings, bringing the viewer into remote scenes untouched by humankind.  Now Kevin has returned to the romantic creativeness of the masters’ portraits he studied as a teen.  He has turned his camera on family and friends to feature real people in his paintings.  Kevin has become increasingly interested in children as subjects for his portraits because he senses in them an innocence and carefree existence that is readily identifiable.  Kevin recalls real life situations to bring the most honesty he can to his imagined settings.  If people feel as excited about viewing his paintings as he does when creating them, he is satisfied.\r\rInspired by the vastness of beauty and grace in nature, Kevin Daniel has focused on painting wildlife in their nature surroundings, discovering in the process, that people are drawn to and appreciate the realism and authenticity he brings to his subjects.  His paintings take the viewer into remote environs untouched by humankind, deep into forests full of wildlife or high into the mountains where vistas leave you breathless.\r\rKevin draws from real life scenes in order to bring the utmost honesty and realism he can to his imagined settings. In high school I acquired black and white darkroom skills which opened a whole new world to me.  In my late teens I ventured out to the Colorado Rockies amidst columbine and pine trees that smelled of vanilla.  Mountain vistas seeped into my veins and found expression in color photography.\r\rNext my visual sojourns took me to California and Montana.  I studied with Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, V.M. Robertson and Ralph Cooksey-Talbott.  I earned my MA in Fine Art Photography from California State College of Fullerton studying under Eileen Cowin and Darryl Curren.  My Master's graduate show was from a body of work I shot in black and white infrared on a widelux camera of the ranching lifestyle of the family rancher (see Stewards of the Land on the home page).\r\rAnother turn of the clock brought my young family and me to beautiful northern Vermont, where I began working in color again.  Summer, fall, winter and spring: nature's rhythm passed before my camera and I took notice.  I began Haymaker Press in 1987, publishing my own images of Vermont, Maine, the Cape and the Adirondack as greeting cards, journals, posters and original framed photos.  I also shot weddings and portraits running both these businesses out of my home while my sons grew.  In 2000 I moved the businesses to Main Street, Morrisville and also opened Haymaker Card and Gift.  I also began a new journey with kayak, camera and pen to observe and record the lifecycle of loons. With the advent of the publishing of his work as limited editions and posters, he is now one of the most collected artists in America. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes.  However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs.  The real subject is their surfaces.  “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use.  How many stories they must have to tell”.  \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging.  He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics.  His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania.  He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.  He has been the recipient of many awards for his work in national and international exhibitions and has had numerous one-man shows.  He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes. However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. \"I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware‚Ķthe signs of wear and hard use. How many stories they must have to tell‚Äù. Over the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging. He compiled many of them in a book titled, \"Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors‚Äù, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print). Ray' s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics. His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist' s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China. Ray is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania. He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.
