In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. Matisse/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

About the Artist
Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. As a master of supreme decoration and expressive use of color, his visionary experiments into different styles of painting from his impressionistic domestic and figurative subjects to his abstract cut-outs changed our perception of the world.Early in his career, Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist (a group of artists known as the "wild beasts"). His work gravitated to the beautiful and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Matisse’s Fauvist years were superseded by an experimental period, as he abandoned three-dimensional effects in favor of dramatically simplified areas of pure color, flat shape and strong pattern.As a man of nervous temperament, he coaxed his anxious tension into serenity through painting. In his later years, Matisse moved into a period of selfless invention, creating his cut-outs carved in colored paper and sometimes collaged into vast pictures. The geometric rightness and color radiance of these pictures sum up his greatest gift: his innate knowledge of how colors and shapes could come to life spectacularly when set in context.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/M1926_e059cd1d-c452-4afa-b16a-651addf56ac2.jpg?v=1633480466
lisa-audit-tranquil-bath-ii
Tranquil Bath II
© Lisa Audit\r
\r
About the Artist
Lisa Audit is a Canadian artist born and raised in Marbleton, Quebec. He initially took his subject matter from True Romance and Adventure comics, as well as the Yellow Pages. His bold outlines, vivid colors, stylized forms and signature Benday dots simulated mechanical reproduction techniques. Born in New York in 1923, he studied under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in New York, before completing his Master’s degree at Ohio State University. Back in New York, he worked as a commercial artist and designer and did display work for shop windows. His paintings and drawings at this time were parodies of American art of the 1920’s. His one-man exhibit at the influential Leo Castelli Gallery in 1965 helped establish his position as one of the founders of Pop Art. An eccentric and masterful Surrealist in painting and in life, Dali wrote in his diary two years before entering art school in Madrid during the early 1920s: "Perhaps I’ll be despised and misunderstood, . . . but I’ll be a great genius." Throughout his life, Dali cultivated eccentricity and a predisposition towards narcissistic exhibitionism, claiming that his creative energies were derived from it. The spectrum of imagery from fantastic to nightmarish visions which Dali produced are the supreme evidence of these idiosyncrasies. Born in Figueras, Spain, Dali first studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Madrid and was influenced by metaphysical painters de Chirico and Carrà while there. Equally admiring the meticulous realism of the Pre-Raphaelites and French 19th century painters, he began to blend conceptual styles and techniques. Beginning in 1927, Dali exhibited in Madrid and Barcelona, earning a reputation for being one of the most promising younger painters. A visit to Paris in 1928 brought him into contact with Picasso and the Surrealists: Miró, Masson, Ernst, Tanguy and André Breton. Shortly thereafter he became a leading figure of the Surrealist movement. In 1941 he had his first retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Coastal environments throughout the U.S., South America, the Caribbean and Europe are favorites.
Mary Lou loves travel and the pursuit of the initial image as well as her unique creative digital painting process to bring the image to where she envisions it should be. Personally and spiritually, the process is challenging and fulfilling. She supports conservation of our natural world and strives to encourage others to observe and preserve the beauty around us. With her images, collectors around the world bring exquisite outdoor scenes into their personal home and work spaces.
Art honors and awards include juried local, state, national and international competitions. Most recently, her fine art exhibition was in NYC at the International ArtExpoNY. He also produced sculpture, book illustrations, and sets and costumes for Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.\r
© 2026
McGaw Graphics, Inc.

About the Artist
Generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, van Gogh's striking and exuberant paintings were all produced during a period of only ten years. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalized, he continued to paint and produced one of his most compelling works, The Starry Night. After his death, van Gogh's powerful compositions and expressive use of color greatly influenced Expressionism.
Vincent van Gogh
8x10 image on 11x14 was a Flemish draughtsman, engraver, printmaker and publisher.He was also known as Nicolas Joannes Piscator or Nicolas Joannis Visscher II, after his father who lived ca. 1550-1612. He learned the art of etching and printing from his father, though it is his father who grew the family printing and mapmaking business to one of the largest in his time. It was a family business; Nicolaes Visscher I (1618-1679), and Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702) were also mapmakers in Amsterdam on the Kalverstraat. The times were with the Visschers for other reasons; due to the Protestant reformation, the older bibles with their "Roman Catholic" illustrations were seen as outdated and apocryphal, but to liven up the new Protestant bibles for the less well-read clergy, the Visschers produced illustrated maps and even landscapes of the places in the bible. This became a very successful family business, with collaboration with many respected draughtsmen of the day. A new translation of the bible was done by Johannes Piscator. Though probably not a relative, his bible translation was accepted by the Dutch Staten-General in 1602, which only lent more publicity and authenticity to the "Fisher" name.The trademark of the Visschers was a fisherman, after their name (thus the Latin nickname Piscator). A small fisherman would be strategically placed somewhere near water. If the subject was a landscape without a stream or pond, then often a figure walking with a fishing rod can be seen. Their map plates were reused for a century by other printers who unknowingly copied the entire plates, including the tell-tale fishermen. Observant scholars are thus able to trace the provenance of bibles, maps, and landscapes from these signs.Aside from bibles, Claes Visscher II primarily etched and published landscapes, portraits and maps. He etched over 200 plates and his maps included elaborate original borders. Visscher died in 1652. He was a publisher of prints by Esaias van de Velde, and David Vinckboons, and was a big influence on Roelant Roghman and on his sister Geertruyd.
© Steve Forney\r
\r
About the Artist
Steve Forney is a freelance illustrator who has been drawing as long as he can remember. He studied graphic design at Birmingham College of Art, where he designed the now familiar image of a Union Jack on a Bowler Hat.\r\rAfter graduating he was an advertising agency art director for many years before becoming a freelance illustrator in the late 1970's. Since then he has worked on many national and international advertising campaigns. In recent years his work has included illustrations for museums, in the UK, Middle East and America.\r\rThrough the years he became interested in the posters and images of the 1920s and 30s. One can see the influence that these periods have had on his current works, which demonstrate a contemporary take on the classic vintage poster look.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/collections/tags_4d9ae400-c251-47c5-a4f3-be1a24a0ecaa.jpg?v=1484602560
