In 1945 he entered the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) where he majored in pictorial design. Upon graduation, Warhol moved to New York where he found steady work as a commercial artist. He worked as an illustrator for several magazines including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and The New Yorker and did advertising and window displays for retail stores such as Bonwit Teller and I. Miller. Prophetically, his first assignment was for Glamour magazine for an article titled "Success is a Job in New York."

Throughout the 1950s, Warhol enjoyed a successful career as a commercial artist, winning several commendations from the Art Director's Club and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. In these early years, he shortened his name to "Warhol." In 1952, the artist had his first individual show at the Hugo Gallery, exhibiting Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote. His work was exhibited in several other venues during the 1950s, including his first group show at The Museum of Modern Art in 1956.

The 1960s was an extremely prolific decade for Warhol. Appropriating images from popular culture, Warhol created many paintings that remain icons of 20th-century art, such as the Campbell's Soup Cans, Disasters and Marilyns. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films, which have become underground classics such as Chelsea Girls, Empire and Blow Job. In 1968, Valerie Solanis, founder and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men) walked into Warhol's studio, known as the Factory, and shot the artist. The attack was nearly fatal.

At the start of the 1970s, Warhol began publishing Interview magazine and renewed his focus on painting. Works created in this decade include Maos, Skulls, Hammer and Sickles, Torsos and Shadows and many commissioned portraits. Warhol also published The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again). Firmly established as a major 20th-century artist and international celebrity, Warhol exhibited his work extensively in museums and galleries around the world.

The artist began the 1980s with the publication of POPism: The Warhol '60s and with exhibitions of Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century and the Retrospectives and Reversal series. He also created two cable television shows, "Andy Warhol's TV" in 1982 and "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" for MTV in 1986. His paintings from the 1980s include The Last Suppers, Rorschachs and, in a return to his first great theme of Pop, a series called Ads. Warhol also engaged in a series of collaborations with younger artists, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente and Keith Haring.

Following routine gall bladder surgery, Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987. After his burial in Pittsburgh, his friends and associates organized a memorial mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York that was attended by more than 2,000 people.

In late 1987, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was duly incorporated in accordance with Warhol’s will, whose mission is for the advancement of the visual arts. He is most known for his iconic images of food, rendered in a style which may have stemmed from his early experience as a freelance cartoonist in the late 1930's.While serving in the army from 1942 to 1945, Thiebaud was able to flex his artistic muscles by working as a cartoonist and painting murals for the officers' club and the post theater before being assigned to the first Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. In 1946, while employed as a cartoonist, he also took a job as an advertising artist in Hollywood for Universal Studios. In 1949 Thiebaud enrolled at California State University at San Jose, transferring to the University at Sacramento, where he received a B.A. in 1951 and an M.A. in 1952. During his college years he worked on commissions for the California State Fair and Exposition, serving as a design and art consultant. He taught studio art and art history at Sacramento City College from 1951 to 1959, becoming chairman of the department in 1954. From 1959 to 1972, he taught at the University of California at Davis. In 1968 he represented the United States in the Sao Paulo Biennal in Brazil. In 1981 the College Art Association named Thiebaud the most distinguished studio teacher of the year. In 1985 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.Thiebaud is best known for his still life paintings of everyday objects like sandwiches, gumball machines, toys, cafeteria-type foods, and especially thickly painted cakes and pies. His work illustrates a more nostalgic rather than satirical depiction of American consumerism, which was a staple of other artists of the Pop movement in the 1960's. He later went on to paint San Francisco landscapes in the 1970's. His most recent works are brilliantly colored semi-abstract California landscapes.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
The French Impressionist ideals of outdoor scenes depicted with sparkling color and light are embodied in the early works of Renoir, who began his career as a painter in a porcelain factory. His later works, particularly his formal figure paintings of women, show a more disciplined approach and a break from contemporary themes to more timeless subjects.\r\rIn 1862, he entered the studio of Gleyre and formed lasting friendships with other Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet. He endured much hardship early in his career but achieved success as a portraitist in the late 1870s. After visiting Italy in 1881-82, he abandoned the Impressionist ideal and developed a softer and more supple kind of handling which is evident in his pictures of young girls in softly colored settings.\r\rHe is perhaps the best-loved of all the Impressionists for his cheerful subject matter - pretty children, flowers, lovely women - and their instant appeal. He once wrote, "Why shouldn’t art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world." As a great worshiper of the female form, he mused, "I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it.\
© Steve Forney\r
\r
About the Artist
Steve Forney is a freelance illustrator who has been drawing as long as he can remember.

In 1989, the Museum of Modern Art in New York had a major retrospective of his works.

Finally, The Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May 1994.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/W1820_16bb0c42-b5d2-429d-aade-6fe0346dd651.jpg?v=1599061844
amy-dixon-winetasting
Winetasting
Image © Amy Dixon\r
\r
About the Artist
Born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, Dixon now lives in Denver, Colorado with her 3 children and chocolate lab. Dixon approaches painting much as she does her life...intuitively with free expression. "Anything is possible if the art spirit is right." Direct observation of everyday life and a keen sense of what will work on canvas fuel her passion for exploring fresh subjects as well as revisiting old favorites. The work is about color, immediacy and an intuitive response to the world around her. Inspiration is drawn from paying attention to the moment and recognizing ideas that connect with the soul...color, form, mood, light, music, conversation, dreams. Dixon's personal journey challenges her to investigate peace, harmony, chaos, fears, stress and laughter of the day... to reveal and paint in response to this LIFE and all its complexities. Going back to her Louisiana roots and the familiar laissez le bon temps rouler...that is, let the good times roll on the canvas! ...and she does.\r\rAmy Dixon received her BA in Studio Art from Newcomb College of Tulane University. Manet studied the works of Dutch artist Frans Hals in Holland in 1872. Hals taught him to liberate his brushstrokes when creating and to paint with more energy and verve. These techniques provided a basis for Manet to become one of the founders of the Impressionist Movement.\r\rOne of Manet's most significant works is "Luncheon on the Grass," which depicts a nude model in the presence of two men. This piece provoked and offended the critics of the time who claimed it was pornographic and immoral. The Salon, one of the most influential galleries in Paris at the time, refused to exhibit the work, but it proved to be one of the pivotal works of art in the Salon des Refuges, a gallery whose specific reason for existence was to display the rejected works of leading artists.\r\rMany of the young Impressionists of the time followed Manet's lead and broke away from the traditional artistic styles of the past. This trend eventually served as the basis for modern art. An aristocratic family (descendants of the Counts of Toulouse) that had recently fallen on hard times, the Toulouse-Lautrecs were feeling the effects of the inbreeding of past generations; the Comte and Comtesse themselves were first cousins, and Henri suffered from a number of congenital health conditions attributed to this tradition of inbreeding (see below). A younger brother was born to the family on 28 August 1867, but died the following year.\r\rThroughout his career, which spanned less than 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec created 737 canvases, \r275 watercolors, 363 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings, some ceramic and stained glass work, and an unknown number of lost works. Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gaugin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period. His debt to the Impressionists, in particular the more figurative painters Manet and Degas, is apparent. In the works of Toulouse-Lautrec can be seen many parallels to Manet's bored barmaid at A Bar at the Folies-Bergère and the behind-the-scenes ballet dancers of Degas. He excelled at capturing people in their working environment, with the colour and the movement of the gaudy night-life present, but the glamour stripped away. He was masterly at capturing crowd scenes in which the figures are highly individualised. At the time that they were painted, the individual figures in his larger paintings could be identified by silhouette alone, and the names of many of these characters have been recorded. His treatment of his subject matter, whether as portraits, scenes of Parisian night-life, or intimate studies, has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate.\r\rToulous-Lautrec's skilled depiction of people relied on his painterly style which is highly linear and gives great emphasis to contour. He often applied the paint in long, thin brushstrokes which often leave much of the board on which they are painted showing through. Many of his works may best be described as drawings in coloured paint.\r\rAfter Toulouse-Lautrec's death, his mother, the Comtesse Adèle Toulouse-Lautrec, and Maurice Joyant, his art dealer, promoted his art. His mother contributed funds for a museum to be built in Albi, his birthplace, to house his works. As of 2005, his paintings had sold for as much as US$14.5 million.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/L4164_48cd95b6-5195-4bc1-9d2d-347ba282b2ef.jpg?v=1642189763
my-zoetrope-serenade
Serenade
Image © My Zoetrope\r
\r
About the Artist
My Zoetrope is a Brooklyn-based business run by Illustrator and Designer Michelle Cavigliano. He immediately started painting caricatures for the French publication Le Rire. This precipitated a string of assignments with the French newspapers.\r\rIn 1900, he signed a contract to do poster designs for the poster publisher Vercasson. Gradually his style developed so that his images were created using solid lines and strong flat color. His contribution to poster design contemporized this popular art form. He worked as a freelance photographer for a picture agency and numerous magazines. He was very much influenced by Walker Evans and Robert Frank. He would spend many hours in the cities, zoos, rodeos and airports of the United States shooting the characters and animate and inanimate objects he found there. His images are said to capture the "decisive moment" to photographers.Winogrand produced five books in his career, including The Animals (1969), Women Art Beautiful (1975), Public Relations (1977), and Stock Photpgraphs: The Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo (1980).
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/W869_375a2102-8fc7-43a7-bc34-b5370b1a9875.jpg?v=1633374610
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/P1006p_5b960db6-3d6e-45c2-8582-356946f6b33e.jpg?v=1656434190
steve-forney-cosmopolitan
Cosmopolitan
© Steve Forney\r
\r
About the Artist
Steve Forney is a freelance illustrator who has been drawing as long as he can remember. Following graduation, he decided to pursue his artistic impulses and dove into freelance illustration.\r\rForney works both digitally and with an airbrush. Joseph Binder, A.M.
