Matisse/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York

About the Artist
Matisse is often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. As a master of supreme decoration and expressive use of color, his visionary experiments into different styles of painting from his impressionistic domestic and figurative subjects to his abstract cut-outs changed our perception of the world.

Early in his career, Matisse was viewed as a Fauvist (a group of artists known as the "wild beasts"). His work gravitated to the beautiful and his celebration of bright colors reached its peak in 1917 when he began to spend time on the French Riviera at Nice and Vence. Matisse’s Fauvist years were superseded by an experimental period, as he abandoned three-dimensional effects in favor of dramatically simplified areas of pure color, flat shape and strong pattern.

As a man of nervous temperament, he coaxed his anxious tension into serenity through painting. In his later years, Matisse moved into a period of selfless invention, creating his cut-outs carved in colored paper and sometimes collaged into vast pictures. The geometric rightness and color radiance of these pictures sum up his greatest gift: his innate knowledge of how colors and shapes could come to life spectacularly when set in context.
Image is Copyrighted and Property of its respective owner\r
\r
About the Artist
From Paris to the Riviera, Raoul Dufy's lively watercolors capture the essence and energy of France during the early 20th century.\r\rBorn in LeHavre, Dufy began his studies there, taking night classes at L'cole des Beaux Arts. In 1900, after being awarded a scholarship to pursue his artistic ambitions, the artist moved to Paris and enrolled at the cole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts.\r\rWhile the Impressionist-dominated Parisian art scene had a profound impact on Dufy's early landscapes, the artist attended an exhibition of the Salon des Independants of 1905 and was struck by the dazzling colors of Matisse and the Fauvist group. This encounter radically changed the artist's approach to painting. Dufy immediately began to incorporate the lively brush strokes and brilliant color of Fauvism into his work.\r\rWorking primarily in watercolor, the artist developed a signature technique of highly stylized calligraphic drawings accented with washes of bold color. His travels around the Mediterranean provided inspiration for many of the artist's best known paintings and the cheerful theme of the seaside is a recurring motif in his work. These immensely popular works exude spontaneity with their exuberant color and dynamic line.\r\rDufy extended the range of his oeuvre with innovative fabric design, book illustration, ceramics and tapestry. Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, planting the extensive gardens and lily ponds that would provide the inspiration for his later works.\r\rFrom 1890 he concentrated on a series of pictures in which he painted the same subject at different times of the day in different light. At the age of 2 he contracted polio, which left his legs paralyzed for life. As a youth, he sketched the Massachusetts coastline around Cape Ann. In the mid-1830s his talents came to the attention of the eminent lithographer William Pendleton, who invited Lane to become an apprentice in his Boston firm.\r\rPendleton's shop provided Lane with his only formal training in art. Lane produced several lithographed business cards and music-sheet covers. In 1837 he did his first town views, including the National Lancers on the Boston Common. During this time he also saw exhibitions of 17th-century Dutch art at the Boston Athenaeum, as well as the city and harbor views then being painted by the English artist Robert Salmon. These provided a stimulus for Lane's own early paintings.\r\rLane traveled back and forth between Boston and Gloucester during the late 1830s and early 1840s, then settled permanently in Gloucester in 1848. He did several paintings and lithographs of Gloucester which show a telling sense both for specific details and general effects of light and atmosphere. He was fascinated by the myriad activities along the harbor front and on the water, as revealed in his 1844 View of Gloucester. The painting was subsequently redone as a lithograph.\r\rIn the summer of 1848 Lane made his first cruise along the Maine coast. Thereafter, he and various friends returned almost annually to explore the coast of Penobscot and Blue Hill bays and Mount Desert Island. Lane now began to paint quiet, evocative views, and he preferred to depict the transitional hours of the day, such as sunrise and sunset, rather than to fill his pictures with people, as he had done earlier. He applied his paint more thinly and used a glazing technique to create effects of serenity and stillness. Occasionally a contemplative figure appears, to reinforce the sense of man's spiritual harmony with nature.\r\rAll of Lane's later work possesses this aura of calm and spaciousness. He painted two pure landscapes near Gloucester in 1863, possibly under Martin Johnson Heade's influence. For the most part, however, Lane's life and art were remarkably self-contained, although his light-filled canvases forecast the direction of American landscape painting in subsequent decades. He painted two pure landscapes near Gloucester in 1863, possibly under Martin Johnson Heade's influence. For the most part, however, Lane's life and art were remarkably self-contained, although his light-filled canvases forecast the direction of American landscape painting in subsequent decades. He remained actively at work up to the time of his death on Aug. 13, 1865.\r\r
Image © Albert Swayhoover\r
\r
About the Artist
Albert Swayhoover was born in New York City. Immediately after graduating he traveled to Spain and Italy where he began his pursuits as an artist while also working as a product designer for Sarreid Ltd., a U.S. based home furnishings importer. For the next 10 years this experience allowed Jack to work side by side with artists and artisans in their centuries old studios throughout Spain and Italy. During this time Jack became very knowledgeable in old world studio practices involving numerous art forms utilized in the creation of the objects he was designing particularly in Florence Italy while at the same time continuing to develop and hone his own painting skills. Living in Florence amongst some of the greatest art ever created afforded Jack the opportunity to study intensely the art of Western Europe particularly the Italian Renaissance which remains a source he draws upon today. After settling down and marrying in the U.S., Jack and his wife Ann moved to the coast of their\rnative state of North Carolina in 1995. The sea, a lifelong passion and constant subject for Jack, would now be his home and would provide a constant feed of inspiration that would inform his work in a way that would not be possible from a distance. Jack and his wife live in the old seaport town of Beaufort, NC whose inlet leads directly out to sea. It is home to many early 18th century houses as well as the 1718 shipwreck believed to be the pirate Blackbeard's flagship "Queen Anne's Revenge". The artwork of Jack Saylor is extensively held in private and corporate collections throughout the country.\r\r\rFor most of my adult life I have lived and painted by the sea, at first because I wanted to and later because I had to. It is my source. As an artist I try to express myself as clearly as I can, while taking myself out of the work and making way for whatever will emerge. I have no interest in presenting some stylistic flourish or flair through brushwork etc. Instead I want to present a crystal clear depiction of the expression I wish to make by way of the craft of painting, not the act of painting. I often approach my subject matter not square-on, but indirectly from an angle of sorts and thus present it in the same manner. I believe that suggesting a subject can be infinitely more powerful than depicting it entirely and it is through this approach that a viewer can be enticed into creating the unseen parts by way of their own experiences and at that point the dimensions of the work become limitless.\r\r\r
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/S1530_0affaed8-316a-486b-b216-ac473e63fdd4.jpg?v=1641412172
vincent-van-gogh-boats-saintes-maries
Boats Saintes-maries
© 2026
McGaw Graphics, Inc.

About the Artist
Generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, van Gogh's striking and exuberant paintings were all produced during a period of only ten years. His Post-Impressionist work hauntingly conveyed through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.After failing in both his career and love life, van Gogh turned inward, pursuing a position in the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. The artist's earliest works were scenes of peasant life, but after a trip to Paris in 1886, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and the Japanese prints en vogue at the time, he dramatically transformed his style from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism.Inspired by the beauty of rural Arles, he moved there in 1888, but continued to struggle with nervous crisis and depression, and after one particularly severe episode, committed himself to an asylum at St. Remy. While hospitalized, he continued to paint and produced one of his most compelling works, The Starry Night. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important artists in American art history.\r\rFor the length of his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some forty years later, Eakins worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine, and clergy. Taken en masse, the portraits offer an overview of the intellectual life of Philadelphia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; individually, they are incisive depictions of thinking persons. As well, Eakins produced a number of large paintings which brought the portrait out of the drawing room and into the offices, streets, parks, rivers, arenas, and surgical amphitheaters of his city. These active outdoor venues allowed him to paint the subject which most inspired him: the nude or lightly clad figure in motion. In the process he could model the forms of the body in full sunlight, and create images of deep space utilizing his studies in perspective.\r\rNo less important in Eakins' life was his work as a teacher. As an instructor he was a highly influential presence in American art. The difficulties which beset him as an artist seeking to paint the portrait and figure realistically were paralleled and even amplified in his career as an educator, where behavioral and sexual scandals truncated his success and damaged his reputation.\r\rEakins also took a keen interest in the new technologies of motion photography, a field in which he is now seen as an innovator. Eakins was controversial figure whose work received little by way of official recognition during his lifetime. He served an apprenticeship with a Boston lithographer, then became a freelance illustrator in New York City. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1860 and was elected a member in 1865. During a stay in France in 1866, he was attracted to French naturalism and Japanese prints, but they had little effect on his generally bright and happy work. He became a master of watercolour and his ability as an oil painter matured; he focused increasingly on solitary, withdrawn figures. He spent 1881 – 82 in the English village of Tynemouth, on the North Sea, where the coastal atmosphere, the sea, and the stoic people are the subjects of some of his most powerful images. In 1883 he moved permanently to Prouts Neck, and his dominant theme became the sea and the endless struggle against an uncaring nature. In 1835, Nathanial Currier created his first lithographic print, an image documenting the Planter's Hotel fire in New Orleans. This documentation of a newsworthy event in print initiated a long tradition of capturing social, economic and political events in the medium, available for reproduction.\r\rBefore Currier and his partner, James Merritt Ives, came on the scene, the use of color illustrations was virtually unheard of in the publishing business. Currier and Ives lined up black and white lithographs on long tables and hired women to individually handcolor the images. Although the artists generally supervised the colorists, often the colorist determined the palette.\r\rCurrier and Ives used many different artists to produce the underlying lithographs and many gained worldwide reputations based on the popularity of the prints. Harry T. Peters documented and compiled one of the largest collections of Currier and Ives prints in an effort to preserve the art form for future generations, a collection which he donated to the Museum of the City of New York. According to Mr. Peter's notes, Currier and Ives published over 7,000 images. Benson's paintings of his daughters enjoying the fleeting days of a turn of the century summer holiday provided the artist the opportunity to explore the subtle nuances of light, a favored subject of the Impressionist movement.\r\rBorn in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1880 to 1883. In 1883, the artist traveled to Paris with childhood friend and fellow artist Edmund C. Tarbell where both men continued their studies at the Academie Julian. Returning to the United States, Benson taught at the Portland School of Art and later at the Museum School in Boston with Tarbell.\r\rBenson was accomplished in a variety of media including watercolor, pastel, aquatint and engraving and was a founding member of "The Ten," a group of ten well known American Impressionist painters from New York and Boston who exhibited together for nearly twenty years. Like his French counterparts, Benson frequently painted outdoors to capture the dynamic character of light. In the late 1890s the artist accepted a prestigious commission to work on the decoration of the Library of Congress and completed murals of Fours Seasons and Three Graces for the project. The Impressionist style, pioneered by Monet in France, enjoyed tremendous popularity with the American public and as a result, Benson attained a large measure of success as an artist during his lifetime.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/B1503_55a5b2ed-9d9a-4061-a645-98e6e309dcac.jpg?v=1641496296
albert-swayhoover-topsail-island
Topsail Island
© Albert Swayhoover\r
\r
About the Artist
Albert Swayhoover was born in New York City. His goal was to demonstrate "optical mixture." He accomplished this by placing small dots of contrasting colors next to one another in his paintings. The effect is one of pure color that blends in the viewer's eye, not on the palette or canvas. This technique is seen in the painting, "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." This painting was shown in the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886. Seurat made countless drawings and oil sketches of different aspects of his initial ideas that were ultimately included in his final canvases. He was careful to balance his compositions so that no single aspect of the painting dominated the whole. Seurat's paintings proved to be a great influence on the Post-Impressionists, including Van Gogh, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec. Manet studied the works of Dutch artist Frans Hals in Holland in 1872. Hals taught him to liberate his brushstrokes when creating and to paint with more energy and verve. These techniques provided a basis for Manet to become one of the founders of the Impressionist Movement.\r\rOne of Manet's most significant works is "Luncheon on the Grass," which depicts a nude model in the presence of two men. This piece provoked and offended the critics of the time who claimed it was pornographic and immoral. The Salon, one of the most influential galleries in Paris at the time, refused to exhibit the work, but it proved to be one of the pivotal works of art in the Salon des Refuges, a gallery whose specific reason for existence was to display the rejected works of leading artists.\r\rMany of the young Impressionists of the time followed Manet's lead and broke away from the traditional artistic styles of the past. This trend eventually served as the basis for modern art. Mass., U.S. — died Sept. 29, 1910, Prouts Neck, Maine) was an American painter. In his later years he continued to paint vigorously and in near-total isolation. Though he was recognized in his lifetime as a leading U.S. painter, appreciation of his enormous achievement came only after his death.\r
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0223/4033/products/H526_26794a9a-d763-4417-bef6-f05ad399543c.jpg?v=1655412077
jane-claire-anchors-away
Anchors Away
© 2026
Trinity Designs

About the Artist
'Jane Claire' are two artists, Jane Kitching and Claire Scott dedicated to innovative style and exiting designs.Both artists studied Surface Pattern and Textile Design at Cleveland College Of Art and Design in the UK. Encouraged at an early age by Jean-Francois Millet, Boudin became a strong advocate of painting directly from nature. In 1874 he exhibited with the Impressionists, but, unlike those painters, he was not an innovator, and from 1863 to 1897 he exhibited regularly in the official Salon. His favourite subjects were beach scenes and seascapes, which show remarkable sensitivity to effects of atmosphere; on the backs of his paintings he recorded the weather, light, and time of day.
