The youngest of five children, Andrew was a sickly child who had to be pulled out of school after contracting whooping cough. He was home-schooled by his parents in every subject including art education. His father, Newel Convers Wyeth, was a well known illustrator whose art was featured in many magazines, calendars, posters and murals. Andrew had a vivid memory and fantastic imagination that led to a great fascination for art. His father recognized an obvious raw talent that had to be nurtured. While his father taught him the basics of traditional academic drawing Andrew began painting watercolor studies of the rocky coast and the sea in Port Clyde Maine. He worked primarily in watercolors and egg tempera and often used shades of brown and grey. He held his first one-man show of watercolors painted around the family’s summer home at Port Clyde, Maine in 1937. It was a great success that would lead to many more. Wyeth married Betsey James at the age of twenty-two and had two boys, Nicholas who became an art dealer, and James who became the third generation artist in his family. Andrew was featured on the cover of American Artist as well as many other famous magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post that displayed his painting \"The Hunter\". His first solo museum exhibition was presented in 1951 at the Farnsworth Art Museum. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes.  However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs.  The real subject is their surfaces.  “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use.  How many stories they must have to tell”.  \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging.  He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics.  His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania.  He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.  He has been the recipient of many awards for his work in national and international exhibitions and has had numerous one-man shows.  He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. His training also led him to develop equal skill in watercolor, egg tempera, and oil painting; three disparate and difficult media to master.\n\nAlthough people are never depicted in his landscape paintings, Lu’s keen interest remains in human life and emotions; whether it be rocking chairs on the porch on a lazy afternoon or a pair of oars against an aged beach house, human spirit is always present. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes.  However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs.  The real subject is their surfaces.  “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use.  How many stories they must have to tell”.  \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging.  He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics.  His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania.  He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. I work with acrylics in two basic styles: one resembling watercolors and the other, oils. The \"oil\" paintings incorporate layers of color and have a crackled finish achieved through a series of glazes applied over the artwork.\r\rSince the early 1970s, I have exhibited at juried arts festivals and folk art shows in the Northeast; have displayed my work in galleries, designer showcases, schools and churches; and have sold work to specialty shops around the country. this watercolor artist.  Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes.  However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs.  The real subject is their surfaces.  “I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware…the signs of wear and hard use.  How many stories they must have to tell”.  \rOver the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging.  He compiled many of them in a book titled, “Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors”, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print).\rRay’s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics.  His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist’s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China.\rRay is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania.  He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.  He has been the recipient of many awards for his work in national and international exhibitions and has had numerous one-man shows.  He is listed in “Who’s Who in American Art”. Ray is highly regarded for his detailed rural landscapes and antique still lifes. However, he explains, the real subject of my work is not the aging farm buildings, the rustic old mills or the antiqued crocks and jugs. The real subject is their surfaces. \"I am intrigued by the texture of a crumbling stone wall, the splintered wood of an old wagon or the way the light reflects off a piece of hand-turned stoneware‚Ķthe signs of wear and hard use. How many stories they must have to tell‚Äù. Over the years, Ray has developed a number of texturing methods to accurately depict these signs of aging. He compiled many of them in a book titled, \"Texture Techniques for Winning Watercolors‚Äù, published by Northlight and released in November of 1999 (now out of print). Ray' s work has been published, as prints, by Primrose Press, Galaxy of Graphics, and most recently, by Bruce McGaw Graphics. His work has appeared in many books and magazines such as Splash 3, Splash 4, Splash 9, Palette Talk, Bucks Country Magazine, County Line Magazine, American Artist, Artist' s Magazine and Chinese Watercolor, an art magazine published in Beijing, China. Ray is represented by several galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania. He is an elected signature member of the American Watercolor Society, The National Watercolor Society, The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society (also awarded Sylvan Grouse Guild member status of the society), The Philadelphia Watercolor Society (recipient of the Crest Award for continued excellence), and the International Society of Acrylic Painters. What seemed like an experiment at the start seems now like a natural drawing together of many threads of my life: my traditional art style, my faith, and my fascination with our artistic and cultural history.\n\nHaving taken my first lessons at the Philadelphia Art Museum before entering grade school, I can't remember life before art. I went on to earn a B.F.A. from Denison University. Then while working in an antique and decorating shop, I began painting naive portraits of children (real and imaginary).\n\nIn researching the portraits, I encountered other folk art forms: landscapes, still lifes, theorem paintings, stenciling and faux graining, needlework, sculpture, scherenschnitte, etc. I became fascinated with the stylizations, the colors, the textures, and the crackled and aged finishes. The feeling of peace, light-heartedness, and friendly openness I found there resonated with me.\n\nIncorporating subjects, forms, and techniques from 18th and 19th century folk art, I gradually developed a personal style to apply to not only portraits, but landscapes and still lifes as well. Many pieces are inspired by short verses from the Bible.\n\nMy paintings are original compositions on gessoed fiberboard, plastic laminate, wood, canvas, or paper. I work with acrylics in two basic styles: one resembling watercolors and the other, oils. The \"oil\" paintings incorporate layers of color and have a crackled finish achieved through a series of glazes applied over the artwork.\n\nSince the early 1970s, I have exhibited at juried arts festivals and folk art shows in the Northeast; have displayed my work in galleries, designer showcases, schools and churches; and have sold work to specialty shops around the country.
