About the Artist

Kyle Sims was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on June 12, 1980. He was raised there until the age of 18 when he ventured off to college in Billings, Montana where he received his bachelor’s degree in art. Kyle’s obsession with depicting the natural environment around him began early, but he can remember the age of 13 being a crucial time. He began taking workshops at the age of 16 and it was those workshops that enabled him to meet Dan Smith who has become of good friend and also, Paco and Toni Young, who nurtured his development. Paco encouraged Kyle to paint from life and it is this way of seeing that changed Kyle’s work in a big way. The best part of all of this to Kyle, besides making new discoveries with oil paint, is getting out and observing the wildlife firsthand. And with the Ungulates, it is during their rutting periods that it can become very interesting. They each have their own little differences, but ultimately their social interactions and activity levels increase. These occurrences can make for some fun story telling within the painting, which is a key to a successful piece. Kyle’s art background goes as far back as he can remember. One memory he has of himself, is when he was five and observing a television program discussing dinosaurs. He can remember having an urge of excitement to recreate on paper what he was seeing. This urge was not taught. It was just there. It is this same urge that occupies Kyle’s mind today and is the driving force behind it all. Every year, Kyle’s tastes with painting and art continue to evolve and they will do so for the rest of his life. It’s a part of who he is and his obsession with improving. If you’re not going forwards, then you’re going backwards, right? Kyle is currently residing near Bozeman, MT with his wife Joylene. He has been exhibiting annually at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale along with a few well known miniature shows. In 2005, he was awarded the Wildlife Award at the former Arts for the Parks competition. During that same time, he was awarded the Distinguished Young Artist Award from the Society of Animal Artists. His work has appeared in Southwest Art, Art of the West, Wildlife Art, and Western Art Collector magazines. Kyle Sims is represented by Trailside Galleries in Jackson, Wyoming and Scottsdale, Arizona.
