Born in Belgium and raised in the United States and England, Martine Franck studied at the University of Madrid (1956-57) and at l'Ecole du Louvre in Paris (1958-63). After completing her history of art thesis on Cubism and sculpture, Franck turned from art history to photography. She was soon freelancing for Life, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, the New York Times, and Vogue.
Franck has been a full member of Magnum Photos, the cooperative photo agency, since 1983. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows in France, Amsterdam, Switzerland, England, the United States, Argentina, and Japan, among other places. Her work is found in the collections of museums including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both in New York City, and the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
