Andy Warhol’s Art World Rise Documented in HBO’s Brillo Box (3¢ Off)
Brillo Box (3¢ Off) is HBO’s latest documentary film by Lisanne Skyler, who takes a look at Andy Warhol’s ascent in the art world through personal accounts relating to one of the artist’s iconic images. The film focuses on the titular work from 1964 which was purchased by Skyler’s father in 1969 for $1,000. Skyler traces the transfer of ownership of this work through the years as Warhol’s work continued to increase in price at auction, eventually selling for more than $3 million at a Christie’s auction in 2010. Contemporary art is rooted in the movements of the past. One style that continues to inspire is Color Field Painting, which grew from Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940’s. Artists like Mark Rothko and others developed abstract works that harnessed the expressive power of color through large fields that would seem to envelope the viewer, providing a feeling of transcendence.
