About the Artist

Best known for his Documentary and Photojournalism work, renowned American photographer Garry Winogrand first began shooting in the 1950's. Over his 30 year career, he was true to his Bronx, NY roots focusing on street scenes as subject matter for his photography. Winogrand's main subject was America, both its urban and rural landscapes and people. He began his photographic career in New York where he did commercial work. He worked as a freelance photographer for a picture agency and numerous magazines. He was very much influenced by Walker Evans and Robert Frank. He would spend many hours in the cities, zoos, rodeos and airports of the United States shooting the characters and animate and inanimate objects he found there. His images are said to capture the "decisive moment" to photographers. Winogrand produced five books in his career, including The Animals (1969), Women Art Beautiful (1975), Public Relations (1977), and Stock Photpgraphs: The Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo (1980).
