Arthur Dove

Arthur Garfield Dove (American, 1880-1946) was an America modernist painter, often considered to be the first American abstract painter. Using a wide range of media in sometimes unconventional combinations, Dove created abstractions and abstract landscapes.   These works were drawn from natural forms, the artist referring to this type of abstraction as “extraction” whereby he extracted the essential forms of a scene from nature.
