Pantone has confirmed that their 2018 color of the year would be Ultra-Violet, a dramatically provocative and thoughtful shade of purple. The color is said to communicate “originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.” Inspired by the cosmos and the seemingly endless night sky, this shade inspires the desire to look forward to a world beyond our own. Purple has long been associated with the counterculture, non-conformist artistic lifestyles, and individuality often with a mystical or spiritual quality. Capping a year that has been full of political discord, Ultra-Violet emerges as a meditative escape from the troubles the world to a place of refuge on a higher plane. Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute says of the color selection: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and a greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
